Founding Charter of the Jewish Cemetery (1723)
"I, Václav Ferdinand Kunaš of Machovice, lord of Slatina, hereby announce by the power of this letter, on behalf of myself, my heirs, successors and all other future holders of this estate, publicly and before all, especially where required, that my protected Jews of Slatina, in their most humble supplication, have stated that the same place known as Hradce — since already without this, 12 Jewish bodies have lain buried there for fifty-five years — is privileged to them for their burials, and assigned to their disposal, tenure and use in perpetuity. Since the said Jews, in respect of that place at Hradce, which extends 8 fathoms in length and likewise 8 fathoms in width, as well as pedestrian access with a deceased body, have undertaken to pay fifty Rhine guilders to my Slatina revenues and have already paid this sum of fifty guilders in good currency to my said revenues; I have therefore also, upon their reasonable petition, immediately granted them this and bound myself — on behalf of myself, my heirs and future holders of the Slatina estate — to extend such grace not only to all present but also to all future Jews of Slatina, and to authorise them to govern and make use of the said above-named place at Hradce as they see fit, and to use it for their burials in perpetuity. However, with the urgent requirement that firstly they enclose the site at their own expense; and secondly that for each deceased body they pay 45 kreuzer, for an outsider 1 guilder, for an infant of one year 25 kreuzer, and for a child over 1 year up to 3 years the above-determined 45 kreuzer, to my Slatina revenues or those of all future owners; and with this they are granted the compassionately bestowed privilege, liberty and grace, my strong protection and that of my heirs, together with the obligation not to obstruct them in the slightest, either in the burial of those persons or deceased bodies, nor to increase the above-set fees charged to them.
For greater honour and confirmation of all the above I have signed with my own hand and caused my noble seal to be affixed. Given at my estate of Slatina on 9 March 1723.
