Chanovice
The Baroque Château of Chanovice — The original stronghold was established here in the 14th century, when it was held by a series of owners from a family not yet identified. From the 15th century it was owned by the Chanovský family of Dlouhá Ves, who altered the stronghold several times; it remained theirs until 1717. At that point the estate was acquired by the lords of Rummerskirch and from 1794 by a series of further owners. The château complex consists of a sizeable group of one- and two-storey buildings of irregular ground plan around a central square courtyard, which is reached through a long carriageway. Gothic masonry has been preserved with Renaissance and baroque conversions, the last of which, from 1811–1838 (when the château was owned by the Becher family), essentially gave the château its present form. By the château is a garden with a 19th-century gazebo. Near the château stands the baroque Church of the Holy Cross from 1751–1764 and a baroque rectory. On the edge of the village lies an early baroque granary. The château is accessible to the public by prior arrangement. For visitors there is a guided tour of the château and an exhibition of folk toy-making and crafts. On the edge of the village, since 1994 an open-air museum of folk architecture of south-west Bohemia has been gradually taking shape. It was in 1994 that the first building was erected, laying the foundation for the youngest open-air museum in the country.
