The Heaviest Sundial in Bohemia
A massive granite block four metres long and nearly three metres tall, weighing nine tonnes, is hard to miss. A piece of such dimensions and unusual shape is only rarely broken out during quarrying, and so it was preserved in a new, attractive form for future generations as well. You will find it easily on the hill above the village in the direction of Chanovice and, according to all available information, it is the heaviest sundial in the Czech Republic. It is situated to the right of the entrance gate to the quarry of Průmysl kamene, a.s. and from a distance looks more like a monument. On closer inspection, however, you cannot fail to notice the carved numerals and astrological signs, which tell you most about the purpose of this solitary stone. The engraved symbols of the astrological zodiac indicate the monthly signs, while the figure-of-eight line crossing the face of the dial indicates the degree of deviation from exact time. Sundials are by their very nature incapable of recognising and displaying the alternation of 'artificially' created and therefore unnatural summer and winter time.
So find the right time and visit the village of Slatina — not only for the heaviest clock in Bohemia and Moravia that never ticks, but also for its other beauties and secrets...
